Director Kevin Tison (2005-present)
Kevin Tison is currently enjoying his tenth year of teaching high school choral music; his seventh year at Fountain Valley High School. A native of Louisiana, Mr. Tison began his musical education in private piano study at age thirteen. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern State University of Louisiana and a Master of Music degree from Texas Christian University (both in piano performance). During his time at TCU, Mr. Tison was chosen to participate in the renowned Van Cliburn International Piano Institute in Fort Worth, Texas in 1995 – the only American performer selected that year. After moving to California and shifting into the world of high school choral music, he completed his CA Teaching Credential at California State University of Long Beach.
Working extensively in both church and classical music as a published arranger, performer and conductor (instrumental and choral), Mr. Tison has planned and led tours and choral workshops in Hong Kong, Macau, Romania, France, Germany, Denmark, Austria, British Columbia and throughout the United States. His orchestral arrangements have been frequently performed across the country, most notably with his first publication premiered by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra in 1997.
Ensembles under Mr. Tison’s direction have performed and received the highest acclaim at regional, state and national levels, frequently at various Festivals of Gold across the country and the prestigious Golden State South Choral Competition in Southern California, which he will host this coming Spring. He also enjoys being on the other side of the baton, singing with the Long Beach Camerata Singers and the Pacific Chorale, one of the most recognized choral ensembles in the United States.
In 2010, in addition to his being named an Orange County Arts Educator of the Year and Fountain Valley High School Teacher of the Year, Mr. Tison and his work at Fountain Valley High School were featured in MENC’s Teaching Music magazine (April 2010). One of the greatest honors he has received was the recent selection of the Troubadours as one of only four high school choirs to perform at the National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Chicago, Illinois (March of 2011).
Making his home in beautiful Belmont Shore, California, Mr. Tison fills his “non-music” life with various outdoor adventures such as traveling, camping, private piloting and training for Ironman-distance triathlons.
